Almost as big as a battleship yet lighter than air, giant airships remain the largest flying objects ever built. From the makers of ‘The Battleships’, ‘The Airships’ series reveals the dynamic role these remarkable flying machines played in history, peacetime and war in 3 enthralling episodes. Steeped in the dramas of international political intrigue, it is a saga of extraordinary men and nations in a quest to dominate the skies.

Airships pioneered aerial bombing; made the first around-the-world passenger flight; carried explorers to the North Pole; established the first aerial passenger services between Europe, New York, and South America; and became flying aircraft carriers in the US Navy.

The Hindenburg disaster all but destroyed their credibility. But today, more airships are flying than ever before, designed and built by a new breed of aviation pioneers. Craft designed to rival satellites in the stratosphere, to transport enormous cargoes, and to act as surveillance and communication platforms herald a new age for the air.

Investigating how the race to dominate the skies developed between Germany, Britain and the US. German Hugo Eckner piloted the first transatlantic and round-the-world passenger flights, while the US Navy began to build up a Zeppelin fleet - but Britain’s attempts to begin an airship programme were cut tragically short when the newly built R101 crashed on its maiden voyage, killing 48 people including the Minister for Air Lord Thompson

The final instalment of the documentary looks at how the ships fell out of use as passenger aircraft following crashes in the USA, including the Hindenburg disaster in 1937 which killed 35 people. The dirigibles were adapted for defensive purposes as barrage balloons in World War Two, before finding a niche in advertising during the modern era - but their latest incarnation may be a return to military usage as companies develop unmanned models intended for communications and surveillance

With the world in financial turmoil after the Wall Street crash, raising the money needed to build a fleet of airships for intercontinental travel was tough business. Two new ships were built for the US Navy - Akron was the world’s first flying aircraft
