Late on the evening of June 23, 1944, as the moon rose to its highest point in the midnight sky, Allied Lieutenant Commander Jesse Taylor circled in a torpedo plane over the mid-Atlantic, 800 miles southwest of the Azores. He was tracking the movements of the Japanese cargo-carrying submarine known as the I-52. Longer than a football field and carrying more than two tons of gold, I-52 was en route to German-occupied France. But Allied code breakers had discovered its coordinates, a single torpedo was released, and the Japanese sank. Lost in the depths of the mid-Atlantic, the exact location of the submarine was to remain a mystery for over half a century. It was only the dogged perseverance of maritime researcher, Paul Tidwell, that led to the discovery of the sunken submarine. In the tradition of Secrets of the Titanic and other classic National Geographic programs, this is a story of how a great undersea mystery has been solved. This film will blend the excitement of a high tech undersea expedition, the lure of sunken treasure and the fascinating secrets of WWII code breakers.
