Naval warfare in various and ever-changing guises has long been a part of the strategy of military forces. Whether the fleets of the Spanish Armada, the longships of invading Vikings or the Arctic convoys during the Second World War, all are at the mercy of Mother Nature. The most complex military plans, troop movements or surprise attacks are rendered impotent should the wind and waves decide today is not your day.
