剧情简介
Part of the documentary series looking at the most significant battles of the Second World War. This volume traces the history of the battle for Okinawa, the final Pacific island taken by the Americans before their planned invasion of the Japanese home islands was called off after the dropping of the atomic bombs. Bitterly contested by the Japanese, their fanatical resistance inflicted 49,000 casualties on the Americans, while costing them 110,000 men dead and only 7,000 taken prisoner. Even the American general in charge of the operation, General Buckner, was killed in the action, while Japanese kamikaze attacks sank several US warships. Includes informative maps and graphics of the weaponry used by both sides, as well as rare archive footage.
