This series of archaeological mysteries explores ancient murders using forensic science to try to solve the crime. The films are fast-paced with subtle reconstruction used to illustrate the stories. Graphics flesh out what the victim looked like and how they might have died which builds a picture of the environment in which the victim met their end.

Beyond the beautiful Mexican scenery lie the clues to the horrific killings that occurred during the Aztec rule over 700 years ago. The deformed skull of a child was found near an Aztec temple at Mixquic, a suburb of Mexico City. Who was he? How did he die? Was he killed because of his deformity? Aztec specialist Dr Elizabeth Baquedano went to investigate.

An underground cave at Taung in the northern Cape, anatomist, Dr Raymond Dart, discovered the skull of a very young child. But this was no ordinary child as the skull is one of the earliest ever finds of the ‘hominid’ species. It dates back two and a half million years and the child’s skull represents an important missing link. But how did he live and how did he die?

It looks just like any other modern housing estate in Holland but Wassenaar hides a secret, horrific past. Physical anthropologist Dr Liesbeth Smits is trying to explain a mysterious excavation she took part in. A grave dating from the early/middle Bronze Age was excavated containing the skeletons of twelve individuals: six men, two women and four children. One of the children had been decapitated, a woman was buried face down with her face in her hand (as if to cover up a terrible injury) and a male victim had a flint arrowhead buried between his ribs. Had they died in battle or was their death due to something far more sinister? Could these people be the victims of mass murder?
