Documentary series in which Michael Portillo travels the length and breadth of the country to see how the railways changed us.

  • Episode 1:Great Yarmouth to Beccles

Michael Portillo learns more about the country’s railways, beginning with the Great Eastern Line, which runs along the edge of England and into central London. On his travels, he discovers the grave-robbing history of Great Yarmouth and tries his hand at working a Victorian swing bridge in Reedham. He also takes to the air to reveal how a rail guidebook helped aviators during the Second World War

  • Episode 2:Darsham to Felix

Michael Portillo continues his journey along the Great Eastern Line, which ventures from the edge of England to the heart of London. In this leg, he examines the Victorians’ fascination with Dunwich, Britain’s answer to Atlantis, and discovers how Felixstowe became home to the UK’s biggest container port

  • Episode 3:Sudbury to Southend

Michael Portillo visits the sites of Victorian freak shows, rides one of the world’s first electric railways in Southend and encounters the preserved head of a medieval politician as he continues his journey along the route of the Great Eastern Line, carrying George Bradshaw’s Victorian Railway Guidebook

  • Episode 4:Epping to Hackney

Michael Portillo travels from Epping, Essex, to Hackney, discovering why dairy herds were transported by train all over Britain, the importance of the gunpowder trade to Waltham, and details of the first murder on a train

  • Episode 5:Fenchurch to Embankment

Michael Portillo continues following the route of the Great Eastern Line, enjoying a ride on a miniature railway hidden beneath London. During his trip, he also rings the bells of Bow’s church, and tries his hand at announcing at Fenchurch Street station

  • Episode 6:Windsor to Didcot

Michael Portillo retraces railway journeys made by Queen Victoria in the south of England, where she would travel from Windsor Castle in Berkshire to her summer retreat on the Isle of Wight. The first leg of the trip takes him from Windsor’s railway station to Didcot in Oxfordshire, stopping along the way to view a structure designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in Maidenhead. He also tries to collect the mail in the manner of Victorian postal workers on a steam-powered travelling post office

  • Episode 7:Reading to Alton

Michael Portillo’s journey takes him to Alton, where he samples Victorian super food, explores Whitchurch Silk Mill, untouched for more than 150 years, and drives a steam train on the challenging Watercress Line

  • Episode 8:Winchester to the Isle of Wight

Michael Portillo has a go at playing Winchester Cathedral’s Victorian organ as he continues his tour of Britain’s railways. He also goes behind the scenes at a rail works in Eastleigh that began operation in the 19th century, and travels to the Isle of Wight, one of Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday destinations

  • Episode 9:Brockenhurst to Poole

Michael Portillo journeys from Brockenhurst to Poole. He heads to the New Forest, where he seeks venomous adders, discovers a library in Wimborne containing rare books and visits 19th-century potteries that are still trading today

  • Episode 10:Wareham to Portland

Michael Portillo continues following the route Queen Victoria took from Windsor Castle to Isle of Wight, and reveals the oil fields hidden beneath some of England’s seaside resorts. During his journey, he also explores the role Weymouth played in the D-Day landings during the Second World War, and visits the site of Victorian Britain’s most prestigious building rock in Portland

  • Episode 11:Oxford to Pershore

Michael is lead to a special view of the city of Oxford by his 19th century guidebook, samples a Victorian navvies’ brew made by steam power, and discovers a unique and colourful crop in the heart of the Cotswolds.

  • Episode 12:Hartlebury to Great Malvern

Michael Portillo visits the Worcestershire village of Hartlebury, which was once home to a bishop who captured Queen Victoria’s attention, on the second leg of his journey from Oxford to the south Wales coast. He also investigates the secrets of Worcestershire sauce and learns why the Malvern hills were popular with 19th-century health enthusiasts

  • Episode 13:Lydney to Newport

Michael Portillo discovers micro-mines hidden in the Forest of Dean, finds out why the Victorians were so enamoured with Tintern Abbey in the Wye Valley and investigates the railway engineering behind the Newport Transporter Bridge

  • Episode 14:Cardiff to Brecon

Michael Portillo discovers the importance of Cardiff’s Victorian coal heritage to the city’s development. He also finds out why Barry Island has been attached to the mainland since the 19th century, and takes a steam ride through the Brecon Beacons National Park

  • Episode 15:Oxford to Pershore

Michael Portillo sets off on a journey from Oxford, through the Malvern Hills toward south Wales. He gets a special view of the city of Oxford, and discovers a unique and colourful crop in the Cotswolds

  • Episode 16:Berwick-upon-Tweed to Morpeth

Michael Portillo begins his journey to the Isle of Man from Berwick-upon- Tweed, Northumberland, and examines the cross-border history of the town. Plus, he hears the story of the Pitman Painters of Ashington and learns about the perils of working on the rails in Victorian times

  • Episode 17:Bardon Mill to Wigton

Michael Portillo embarks on the second leg of his journey from Berwick-upon- Tweed to the Isle of Man, beginning in the Northumberland village of Bardon Mill. He follows in the footsteps of Victorian archaeologists at Hadrian’s Wall, discovers how the introduction of ticket machines transformed 19th- century train travel and learns about the impact of railways on the west Cumbrian town of Wigton

  • Episode 18:Cockermouth to Eskdale

Michael Portillo heads to Cumbria, where he visits the Sellafield site that reprocesses fuel from nuclear reactors, drinks a Victorian brew made from the waters of Cockermouth and explores a Japanese-inspired garden created in the 19th century

  • Episode 19:Kirkby-in-Furness to Lancaster

Michael Portillo begins his journey in Kirkby-in-Furness, Cumbria, where he learns about the village’s famous blue slates. He then heads to Barrow to examine the secret world of nuclear submarines and finishes his trip in Lancaster, where he discovers why executions at the castle drew so many spectators in Victorian times

  • Episode 20:Heysham to Snaefell

Michael Portillo ends his journey across northern England by setting sail from Heysham, Lancashire, to visit the Isle of Man, where he learns about the horse-drawn trams of Douglas, reveals the 19th-century secrets of the Laxey Waterwheel and explores the Victorian history of the Snaefell mountain railway

  • Episode 21:Bray to Dublin

Today Michael observes the amazing engineering feat involved in building the railway along Dublin’s treacherous East coast, explores 19th century crime and punishment in a Victorian jail, and finds out how the lions of Dublin Zoo changed the fortunes of the railways.

  • Episode 22:Enfield to Drogheda

Today Michael explores the extensive railway network within the Bog of Allen, discovers the Victorian secrets behind the amazing Boyne Viaduct, and travels underground, into the vast Irish Zinc mines.

  • Episode 23:Dundalk to Portadown

Today Michael explores the Victorians’ fascination with antiquity, by visiting the amazing Cromlech stones of Dundalk. He reaches for the stars at the Portadown Observatory and travels in style along the steam railway of Downpatrick.

  • Episode 24:Belfast to Whitehead

Today Michael explores the fascinating history of Belfast’s Victorian docks, discovers the Irish spade making traditions untouched for over 150 years and takes a walk on the wild side with Whitehead’s Victorian coastal paths.

  • Episode 25:Ballymoney to Londonderry

Today Michael takes a white knuckle walk over the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, follows in the footsteps of the Victorians to experience the delights of the Giant’s Causeway and explores the rich history of Londonderry.
