「巴洛克」(Baroque)原指一種形狀不圓的珍珠，也被用來稱呼西元17世紀的歐洲藝術。巴洛克的藝術風格承襲了文藝復興後期的矯飾主義，著重於表現出強烈感情，而不像文藝復興盛期那般嚴肅、含蓄。此時強調流動感、戲劇性、誇張性等特點，經常採用富於動態追求戲劇性、誇張、透視的效果，也反映出當時歐洲動盪局勢的不安定感。
