The first of a two-part documentary telling the stories of the last surviving World War One veterans. Among those featured is Alfred Anderson, who describes being sent to France with the Black Watch and is the only surviving witness to the 1914 Christmas truce. Harry Patch describes an encounter with a seriously injured comrade who begged to be killed. The experiences of the conflict proved so traumatic for him he was unable to speak of them for 80 years

The story of Britain’s last surviving World War One veterans concludes with reminiscences of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Twenty thousand men lost their lives in the first eight hours alone, and 105-year-old Claude Choules recalls seeing some of those who returned from the carnage. Harry Patch bravely makes a final pilgrimage back to the Western Front and meets one of the few surviving German soldiers
