图坦卡蒙恐怕是最出名的法老了。他是古埃及新王国时期第十八王朝的一位法老（在位时期大约是公元前1334年—前1325年或前1323年）。他原来的名字叫“图坦卡顿”，意思是“阿顿”的形象，后改为图坦卡蒙，意思是“阿蒙”的形象，说明他的信仰从崇拜阿顿神向崇拜阿蒙神转变。
图坦卡蒙为现代人广为熟知是因为他的坟墓在三千年的时间内从未被盗，直到1922年才被英国人哈瓦德·卡特发现，挖掘出大量珍宝，震惊了西方世界。由于有几个最早进入坟墓的人早死，被媒体大肆渲染成“法老的诅咒”，图坦卡蒙的名字在西方更为家喻户晓。
图坦卡蒙的父母究竟是谁，一直不清楚，发掘出一个铭文说图坦卡蒙是一位法老的儿子，但究竟是谁的儿子，却没有记载。多数学者认为图坦卡蒙应是阿蒙霍特普三世或其子埃赫那顿之子。学者对图坦卡蒙的木乃伊进行检验后发现他死时约17至19岁。而他即位时埃赫那顿前一位法老（阿蒙霍特普三世）已经去世17年，所以不可能是前一位法老的儿子。
图坦卡蒙与埃赫那顿的女儿结婚，埃赫那顿曾经进行过一次宗教改革，树立阿顿为主神，削减寺庙，减少崇拜的神，以削弱宗教势力。图坦卡蒙即位3年后(前1331年)，在宗教人士的怂恿下，也可能是由实际掌握政权的人所左右进行复辟，重新树立阿蒙神，恢复寺庙，并把首都迁回底比斯。
