Focuses on the dilemma faced by the Yellowstone scientific team. Led by Professor Rick Lieber¬man, their job is to monitor the super-volcano.

When a massive earthquake shakes the park, reporter Maggie Chin fears an eruption is imminent. Rick and his team are on the defensive – but the truth is they have no idea what’s happening in the volcano’s massive magma chamber beneath the park. Alarming events unfold in quick succession, and pressure is on the team to explain what’s going on. No one wants to make a false call because the costs are simply too great. Then comes a sign that nobody can ignore; harmonic tremor, the signal of an impending eruption. It’s no longer a question of if, but when. The team must predict whether it will be a regular eruption or the feared super-eruption. Mean¬while Maggie Chin gets hold of the story and leaks it to the National press. America goes into panic mode. Rick is summoned to Washington and ordered by the Government to downplay the threat. He goes on National Television to allay his country’s fears, just as the eruption kicks off. Hundreds of thousands of people are at risk, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it…

The eruption gets underway. Wendy Reiss, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington, issues instructions to the American public to prepare for an eruption that might last for three days.

On the way back from Washington, Rick’s worst fears are realised. His plane flies into a volcanic ash cloud and he realises that the eruption is already much bigger than anticipated. The truth is, they have no idea how long it will last for. Trapped close to the erupting volcano, Rick’s colleagues try to make their escape but a massive pyroclastic flow overwhelms them. Rick finally finds safety in an underground military bunker, and manages to communi¬cate with FEMA in Washington. Satellite images of the eruption confirm that they are dealing with the first super-eruption in 74,000 years. Over the next six days, we follow Rick and FEMA’s attempts to deal with the unfolding disaster and the challenge of how to rescue 25 million people trapped beneath the ash fall. As the eruption finally comes to an end, the devastating aftermath is revealed across the globe – environmentally, politically, eco¬nomically and socially. Viewers get a glimpse of the future; a post-apocalyptic world.
