In 1997 the Cassini Spacecraft was launched from NASA KSC to start its seven year journey to Saturn, “the jewel of the solar system.” Having crossed 3.2 billion kilometres of space by using the gravitational pull of Earth and Venus like a sling shot, and precariously sailing through a gap in the rings, Cassini finally arrived at its destination in 2004, where it continues its orbit and analysis of the Saturnian system today. This episode of Naked Science uncovers what scientists have learned so far from the lengthy stint spent around this alluring orb. Just what lies beneath the serene exterior of this giant planet? How old is the awe-inspiring ring system? Did the data from the Huygens probe landing on Titan reveal a moon comparable with early Earth? And could there be a potential habitat for life on one of Saturn’s icy satellites?
