Hidden some 1,500 miles from Beijing is the mysterious legacy of the extinct Bo tribe. Wiped out in a massacre during the 16th century, the only testimony to their existence hangs off the sides of steep limestone cliffs, in extraordinary coffins. Premiering in high-definition on Wednesday, April 21 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, Discovery Channel follows China’s leading explorer, How Man Wong, on a recent expedition to unravel the legend of the Bo, in the one- hour special Mysterious Hanging Coffins of China.
Who were the Bo and why did they bury their dead in this unbelievable way? And, more importantly, how did they achieve this amazing feat? Narrated by actress Joan Chen (The Last Emperor, The Joy Luck Club), this investigative program digs deep into one of the world’s most unique and fascinating mysteries.
Living in the 21st century, it’s virtually impossible to imagine that hundreds and thousands of years ago, people were able to free-hand climb these precipitous cliffs while carrying extremely heavy wooden coffins. Even Wong’s crew of experienced climbers from the China Exploration and Research Society used modern equipment and went through a series of trials and errors before successfully reaching the coffins.
Mysterious Hanging Coffins of China is both a scientific quest for answers and a challenge to save the precious artifacts of a civilization that disappeared more than 500 years ago. Through interviews with locals, DNA experts and other scientists, the program presents some viable theories behind the Bo people’s burial practices and reveals possible links between the Bo and modern-day tribes in China. Produced by Bang in association with NHK, the China Exploration and Research Society (CERS) and Discovery US/Asia. Awarded Best Documentary in Asia by the Television Asia Awards in 2004. Voiceover by award- winning actress/director Joan Chen.
