After their fantastic trip round the world in 2004, fellow actors and bike fanatics Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman couldn’t shake the travel bug. And after an inspirational UNICEF visit to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth. And so they set off on their 15,000-mile journey with two new BMWs loaded up for the trip.

Joining up with producer/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian and the Long Way Round team, their route took them from John O’Groats at the northernmost tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas on the southernmost tip of South Africa. Riding through spectacular scenery, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced their hardest challenges yet. With their trademark humour and honesty they tell their story, the drama, the dangers and the sheer exhilaration of riding together again, through a continent filled with magic and wonder.

Ewan and Charley prepare for the ride. Check the maps, consider the potential dangers of the trip, engage in hostile training exercises, check the kit they will be taking, apply for visas and finally set off from John O Groats. Music begins to provide an atmospheric soundtrack to the journey : Sheila Chandra accompanies the bikes through breathtaking Scottish mountain scenery and Martyn Bennett’s “Move” provides the high energy backing to guys as they race round Silverstone track in the rain!

The ride begins in earnest as the team bid farewell to their families in London, take the Eurotunnel into France and race south to Italy. Jo Arthur conveys road traffic madness in Rome and Spaccanapoli are the atmospheric backing to the winding Amalfi coast road. Finally they get to Africa - Maryam Mursal’s uplifting music, Abdelli and Geoffrey Oryema rich voices accompany Ewan and Charlie as they visit the extraordinary ruins of Leptis Magna in Libya.

The riders continue east and south through the continent. Crossing through sandstorms in Libya to the music of Abdelli and the Boxer Rebellion and south to the great pyramids of Geza to the Afro Celt Sound System. A quick flight into Kenya has a soundtrack of Ayub Ogada and Geoffrey Oryema then back on the bikes and taking the ferry from Aswan to the Musicians of the Nile. As the journey takes on a more positive note you can hear Big Blue Ball’s ‘Whole Thing’ and the extraordinary scene of brick makers at sunrise is accompanied by the Afro Celt song ‘Onnwards’. Astonishing scenery in Ethiopia and the uplifting BT and Sasha and finally the closing credits bring Geoffrey Oryema’s ‘Ye Ye Ye’.

Tricky terrain dominated Ewan and Charley’s journey this week. They were falling off their bikes to the sound of Azmari Dub by Dub Colossus. Geoffrey Oryema’s uplifting Ye Ye Ye was the recurring theme on a more positive note. At the Kenyan boarder we heard Ayub Ogada and the more menacing atmosphere of the music of Zawose and Brook while the team camped in remote bandit country. A moving scene at the site of a school massacre in Kenya was accompanied by the beautiful Kothbiro by Ayub Ogada. The Boxer Rebellion could be heard while the guys hit the rough tracks of a grueling route till they arrived at the beautiful lodge complete with elephants to the music of Remmy Ongala’s song Dodoma. The simple country music of Bernard Kabanda played as the team arrived at the little Masai village and sunrise reprised Ayub Ogada’s music once again.

Ewan and Charley encounter some astonishing African landscapes and wildlife in this episode. After their struggle through the mud they finally hit the tarmac road in Kenya to the sounds of Tama. The rural acoustic music of Bernard Kabanda accompanied the boarder crossing into Uganda and the driving sounds of BT and Sasha lift off as they take the next crossing into Rwanda. Bernard Kebanda reprises as the team have an amazing face to face with the mountain gorillas. Rwanda’s brutal massacres are remembered, followed by the music of Geoffrey Oryema’s song ‘The River’. Down the sandy rutted roads of Tanzania to the music of Zawose and Brook and the final credits role to The River once more.

With the end in sight Ewan and Charley continue through Tanzania to the boarder with Malawi. Zawose and Brook’s eerie Ntambalize Lijenje is the soundtrack as Eve arrives to join the journey. Over the sandy roads arriving at the beautiful lake to the sound of Imbizo and then on again to Ben Onono’s Days of Days followed by Syd Kitchen and Madal Kunene’s Zimpi Zombango. More gorgeous lake side lodges provide accommodation for the team accompanied by the music of southern Africa from Thomas Mapfumo and Dorothy Thobekile. As the bikers travel to Zambia and stay in the little local village you can hear the more traditional sounds of Farafina. On into the stunning countryside of Botswana and the pace quickens to the music of the Afro Celt Sound System and Big Blue Ball’s Whole Thing as the bikers drive through the endless volcanic moonscape. They reach the Skeleton coast of West Africa to the moving music of Ayub Ogada. The sun rises as they reach the southern most tip of Africa to the music of Imbizo and the journey reaches its close in Cape Town to the sound of Ben Onono’s Blink.
