眼看在俄勒冈州的飞航生意因为经济不景气而逐渐下滑，塔德想找寻新的商机。由于金价上扬，他打算到阿拉斯加东南部开采金矿，估计当地蕴藏着价值2500亿美元的黄金。阿拉斯加的神秘气息吸引塔德来到波克潘溪，也就是《阿拉斯加金矿的赌注》的故事背景。塔德的父亲杰克在1980年代曾在此地采矿三季，结果差点破产。
